We talk a lot about numbers when it comes to debt: interest rates, minimum payments, payoff strategies. But something that often gets overlooked is the emotional toll debt takes on us.

For me, the burden of debt hasn’t just affected my bank account — it’s impacted my peace, my sleep, my self-worth, and my sense of control. I want to open up about that.

Studies have shown that people with significant debt are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. And it makes sense — when your mind is constantly running numbers or you’re in survival mode, your nervous system rarely gets a break.

In my own case, some of my worst financial decisions were made during moments of emotional distress — especially related to gambling. It became a vicious cycle: stress, impulse, regret, and more debt.
