I’ve been in a funk lately. And honestly, it’s not the first time.
Even though I’ve been putting in the work—budgeting, tracking my debt, picking up side hustles, brainstorming ways to make extra money—I still find myself feeling like I’m behind. Behind on my goals. Behind on debt payoff. Behind compared to my peers who seem to be buying houses, traveling, or living without the constant weight of financial stress.
It’s a tough headspace to sit in.
The reality is, these feelings resurface every so often for me. It’s like I can go strong for weeks, grinding and staying consistent, but then the thoughts creep back in: “Why am I not further along? Why do I feel like I’m always playing catch-up?”
The truth is, I am making progress. I’ve been chipping away at my debt. I’ve been taking on consulting projects. I’ve been reselling and building small habits that, piece by piece, improve my bottom line. They’re not flashy changes, and they’re not instantly life-changing—but they are forward motion.
And that’s what I have to remind myself of: debt payoff is a marathon, not a sprint. Feeling behind is part of the mental battle, but the only way through it is consistency. Keep going. Keep taking the small steps. Keep showing up for myself, even on days where it feels like nothing is changing.
Because here’s the thing—I know if I stop, the funk wins. If I keep going, even slowly, the funk loses.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re behind too—whether it’s in your finances, career, or just life in general—let this be your reminder: you’re not alone. Progress doesn’t always look exciting. Sometimes it’s just choosing to make the minimum payment, list the extra item, or pack your lunch instead of eating out.
Those actions count. They build. They add up.
So today, instead of drowning in “behind,” I’m choosing to take one more step forward—however small it looks.
