💥 The Hidden Cost of Debt on Mental Well-Being
We talk a lot about numbers when it comes to debt: interest rates, minimum payments, payoff strategies. But something that often gets overlooked is the emotional toll debt takes on us.
For me, the burden of debt hasn’t just affected my bank account — it’s impacted my peace, my sleep, my self-worth, and my sense of control. I want to open up about that.
😔 The Emotional Weight of Owing
Living with high-interest credit card balances, loans, and financial instability doesn’t feel like just a math problem — it feels like a constant cloud overhead. Here are just a few of the things I’ve felt:
- Anxiety every time I check my bank account.
- Shame around friends or family, especially when I feel like I’m “behind.”
- Sleepless nights thinking about due dates and balances.
- Isolation, because talking about money feels taboo or vulnerable.
- Guilt when I treat myself, even to a small coffee or meal.
💸 Debt and Mental Health Go Hand in Hand
Studies have shown that people with significant debt are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. And it makes sense — when your mind is constantly running numbers or you’re in survival mode, your nervous system rarely gets a break.
In my own case, some of my worst financial decisions were made during moments of emotional distress — especially related to gambling. It became a vicious cycle: stress, impulse, regret, and more debt.
🧠 How I’m Taking Care of My Mental Health
Here’s what I’m doing to lighten the mental load while working on paying things off:
- Journaling/blogging: Sharing my story here has been healing. Writing things out helps me process the guilt and let it go little by little.
- Limiting doom-scrolling: Financial comparison traps on social media make things worse.
- Connecting with others: Reading stories from people on similar journeys — whether it’s through Reddit, YouTube, or blogs — reminds me I’m not alone.
- Setting small goals: I try to celebrate tiny wins — paying off one card, saying no to a spend I don’t need, saving $5.
- Reminding myself: Debt doesn’t define me. It’s just one part of my story, not the whole thing.
🫶 You’re Not Alone If You Feel This Too
If you’re in debt and feeling like it’s taking over your mind, please know you’re not weak or broken. These feelings are real and valid.
Sometimes, the hardest part isn’t the repayment — it’s carrying the emotional baggage. I still have days where it feels overwhelming. But every payment, every boundary, and every blog post helps me feel a little more free.
